As the end of summer approaches and a new school year waits just around the corner, many parents scramble with last minute preparations. Even with a back-to-school supply list, it’s common to overlook important items your child will need. Back-to-school is a hectic time for everyone, especially parents who have to reestablish school routines and purchase a wide variety of items.
Socks and Underwear
It’s easy to forget to buy your child new socks and underwear while shopping for new school clothes. Your child likely outgrew theirs from last year or are in need of fresh ones to start the school year off. Consider switching to socks without seams to provide them with optimal comfort plus without the heel sewn in, the socks can’t be outgrown quickly! You’ll want to ensure your child has plenty of new socks and underwear to last them as long as possible.
USB Flash Drives
USB flash drives are especially important for older children who complete school work on a computer. These easy to use and inexpensive items hold a lot of information on them and allow students to easily transfer work from their home computer to school or a library computer. USB flash drives vary in storage space and can easily be inserted into a USB port on a computer for simple access to files stored on the device.
Subject dividers help students stay more organized. Even if students have separate binders for all of their school subjects, dividers will still help them find exactly what they are looking for quickly, such as homework assignments. Look for subject dividers with pockets so students can store handouts.
Highlighters come in handy when students want to remember a block of text to quickly reference again in the future. They help to highlight important material in notes or on handouts that may be on an upcoming exam. Post-it notes are great for allowing students to write quick notes about things they want to remember later, such as reminding themselves when an assignment is due or what chapter they need to read in a textbook. These sticky pieces of paper come in a variety of sizes and easy-to-notice fluorescent colors.
Most schools require students to have a calculator that performs specific functions for their classes. Lower grade levels may not need advanced scientific calculators and basic ones may be suitable. Graphing calculators are often required for advanced mathematic classes and offer functions such as cubed root and radical number functions. Scientific calculators are less advanced than graphing calculators but are generally the most common type needed for school.
Index cards can be used in numerous ways by students and are especially helpful when it comes to studying. Sometimes teachers will allow students to bring an index card full of notes to help with a quiz or exam. Students can make flash cards for studying by writing a question on the front of it and the answer on the back. They can also be used to make a to-do list, take notes and keep track of assignments.
Back-to-school doesn’t have to be hectic. By planning well in advance, this time can be made much less stressful for everyone involved. Make sure you stick to the school supplies required by your child’s school to avoid over-buying. Some classes have strict rules when it comes to the items they require students have with them to be optimally prepared. Start shopping early and take advantage of the tax-free weekend to help you save money. It helps to get your child excited about going back to school to keep stress to a minimum.
