Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has long been considered a national hub in the United States. Situated at the halfway point between two of America’s largest cities, New York, and Chicago, Pittsburgh is a perfect amalgam of east coast sophistication and Midwest sensibility. Nestled at the junction of three rivers, the steel city has always been a place where people come together.
The Pittsburgh area offers so many destinations, especially in the cold winter months, that escaping to warmer destinations will be the farthest thing from your mind. Here are three stellar Winter Destinations just a stone’s throw from Pittsburgh that will have your holiday spirit singing all winter long.
Cook Forest State Park
Just 95 mile from the City of Bridges lies an 8500-acre wilderness paradise full of thousands of virgin white pine and hemlock trees. The area is so beautiful it has been designated as a National Natural Landmark. The park is a haven for cross-country skiers, with trails that have been cultivated over years. For couples, the Gateway Lodge offers romantic rustic cabins with private balconies, jacuzzis, and beautiful fireplaces to keep you snug even in the coldest temperatures. For the kids, there are ice skating ponds, and for the adventurous, there are more than 300 miles of snowmobile trails.
Seven Springs Mountain Resort
Once a farm in the Laurel Highlands, owned by Adolph Dupre, in 1935 he commissioned Finn Ronne to develop ski slopes. At first, the resort was no more than a hill with a mechanical tow rope for skiers. Now the resort hosts over 1 million visitors per year and offers everything from golf, to hiking, snow tubing, and clay shooting. The resort is perfect for couples and families as there are numerous activities for everyone, young or old.
Located in Wheeling, West Virginia about 45 minutes away from downtown Pittsburgh, Oglebay Resort offers their annual Festival of Lights. This year offering over 90 different interactive 3D light displays there’s more to this celebration than just lights. This year the resort is offering their new Sleigh Bans 3d eyewear to guests to make the displays truly come to life. For the kids, there’s Santa’s Reindeer Training School where kids young and old get to have a 30-minute animal encounter with these Reindeer recruits.
Pittsburgh is a perfect mix of east and west, old and new and the variety of activities around the city just goes to prove that. If you’re in or around the steel city, make sure to check out everything it has to offer this winter.
