What is Fashion?

Fashion is the general style or trend of clothing, characterized by unique styles, colors and fabrics. It is a form of art and expression, used to convey one’s personal style and a sense of self.

In the past, fashion was a reflection of social and significant historical events, like wartime austerity or women’s emancipation, which were expressed through the clothing that was worn. Today, fashion is an industry that generates and sustains new trends by design, manufacturing, marketing and selling clothing, accessories and footwear.

A fashion trend starts when a designer introduces a new color, silhouette or material to their runway collections. During this phase, the look is spotted by influencers or celebrities that wear it (either by choice or by paid promotion on social media). Once the trendsetters and tastemakers start wearing the new item, it gets noticed by the general public. This is the point where mass markets and fat fashion brands will start producing the new product to meet the consumer demand. The fashion cycle continues when the trend becomes popular, aspirational and then mainstream.

Fashion is a highly globalized industry, with designs and fabrics created in one country and then manufactured, finished or shipped to stores worldwide. It is also a very time-sensitive industry where trends start and finish quickly, often in the space of a season or even less.

There is a common misconception that fashion is just about the latest trends, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. There are many factors that determine what makes a fashion trend; it can be as simple as a celebrity wearing something and then everyone follows suit or the current political climate.

It’s important to remember that fashion isn’t necessarily just about the latest trend, it’s about finding a look that flatters your shape and expresses who you are. So while it’s fine to have a few trendy pieces in your wardrobe, make sure the quality of your clothing is good and they fit well.

The best way to get on-trend is by keeping your basics in good condition and adding pops of color or trendy prints/styles with accessories. Also, don’t be afraid to seek out a tailor if necessary – you can save money in the long run by having your clothes properly fitted. This way, you can avoid expensive repairs and replacements of dodgy shirts and pants that end up shrunken in the wash or ripped after a few washes.
