Fashion is a type of style that is constantly changing and evolving. It is often influenced by culture and trends, but it also changes as people try new things and find ways to express themselves. Fashion is seen in clothes, makeup, accessories and hairstyles. It is often used to distinguish a person from the crowd and to show status. Fashion has also been used as a way to convey political beliefs.
In the more general sense, the word fashion refers to the most popular styles of dress and behavior that are currently in vogue. It can also be applied to specific clothes or pieces of jewelry, such as a leather jacket or ripped jeans. A fashion trend is usually set by a designer or celebrity who creates an outfit that is either stylish or trendy. Once the new fashion is established, it becomes a trend and other designers begin creating similar items.
The earliest documented example of continuous and accelerating change in clothing style dates back to the 14th century. Historians James Laver and Fernand Braudel attributed this early start to the growth of European urban societies. Clothes became more accessible as a result of improved transport systems and the rise of middle class consumer goods.
After a designer has come up with a design they like, they will make a prototype called a “toile” or a “muslin” which is made from paper, cardboard or even plastic. This is then tested on a model to see how the garment fits and how it looks. Once the pattern maker is satisfied with the fit and look of the toile, it is transferred to the actual fabric that will be used for the finished garment. The pattern maker can then mark the actual fabric with seam allowances and the necessary measurements for cutting out each piece of the garment.
During this time, many designers were exploring and experimenting with different materials, such as tweeds and corduroy. The introduction of new fabrics enabled the creation of new and more comfortable styles. After World War II, the development of mass production made fashion faster and more accessible. New technology and advances in fabric finishing techniques were developed and at first offered to the world of Haute Couture before filtering down to the mass market.
Other influences on fashion can be political, as many politicians are seen as fashionable and the clothing they wear is often copied by the public. This is especially true of first ladies such as Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Diana. Also, political revolutions can cause a shift in fashion. For example, the 1960’s saw a liberal revolution which caused young Americans to start wearing more liberal clothing styles. In addition to these, media plays an important role in influencing fashion. This can include television shows, magazines, social media, and fashion blogs.
