Does your house feel too cramped for all your belongings? Without even meaning to, we frequently collect items that we want and need to keep but run out of space to store them. Thankfully, you can increase the space you already have to store things to keep your house nice and tidy all year round.
One of the things that you can use is multi-function furniture. This is furniture that has multiple functions. For example, you can use a hide-a-bed to save space in your guest bedroom. When you don’t have guests over, it serves as a couch, but it can double as a bed in a pinch. You can also use furniture that has built in storage compartments. Many beds have drawers that slide underneath the mattress frame, allowing you to store items in your bedroom that you would otherwise need to find an additional place for. Some bed frames have shelves that line the headboard, allowing you more storage space. Another piece of furniture that can have multi-function is the ottoman. Some ottomans also hold an inner compartment where you can store books, toys, and other items to give your living room space. They still function as a footrest, but they also function as a storage bin. Other pieces of multi-functioning furniture include benches that have storage compartments, armchairs that have storage space under the arms and couches that have drawers that slide underneath. They may be more expensive because of their multi-functionality, but they can save you space and store more items than regular furniture.
A place that is often overlooked is the ceiling. While you may decorate the walls of your home, the ceiling usually remains untouched by decorations, which leaves it available for storage space. You may have seen college students hang their bike on the ceiling to keep it out of the way. You can use the ceiling in the kitchen by hanging a pots and pans rack, which allows you to keep your pots and pans in an easily accessible place, yet out of the way. You can also hang a shelf along the top of the room to store books and other knick-knacks. You’ll have to be careful going up to dust the shelf, but it gives you storage space that you otherwise wouldn’t have. The ceiling offers a place where you can hang hooks to store bikes, pots and pans, and other items that you can put out of the way while still being accessible if you need them.
Another space that you can use is the garage. You may not think you have a lot of space in the garage, but you can actually store quite a bit of stuff there. For example, just like in the house, you can use the ceiling and hang storage racks where you can store all your Christmas decorations. Modular garages provide great options for extra storage. Modular garages are attached after the house is finished and can be an additional way to gain extra storage. Often, garages end up a messy zone because they aren’t organized. While you can park the car into the driveway to gain additional storage, you may end up with a bigger mess on your hands if your belongings aren’t organized. If you organize the extra tools, bikes, and boxes of Christmas decorations, and then clearly label everything and give everything its own place, you’ll not only be able to find them again, you’ll find that you have more space in your garage than you initially thought. The garage has a lot of space that you can use to store belongings, from the ceiling to the sidewalls, but it is important to organize the space.
Another place where you can store things is in organizational racks. Organizational racks can be hung on the backs of doors, inside closets, and used in pantries to provide more organizational space. You might be familiar with the shoe-rack hung inside the closet to get all the shoes off the floor and into their own easily accessible space. You can also use organizational bins to help organize items. For example, in the pantry you can use organizational bins to separate the flour, sugar, and noodles from one another. You can also use organizational racks for canned goods to make them easily accessible and viewable.
Organizing bins can also be helpful in other rooms of the house if there isn’t space to hang an organizing rack. For example, in your linen closet, you can use small bins to organize soap and dishrags, keeping things neat and organized. You can also use bins in the toy-room to keep toys from cluttering up the floor. Organizing materials help you make the most of the space you already have by helping you divide it into sections that you can then fill with your belongings.
Behind the Door Shelves
Another place where you can add extra storage is behind the door. You can build shelves that fit into the wall behind the door where it is out of the way. Some shelves need to be custom-made, but they can really help you make the most out of a cramped space, especially if you have a small closet that’s being shared with multiple people. You can also buy shelves that go over the back of the door, which can be useful in bathrooms, playrooms, and in the pantry. Behind the door shelves don’t have to be a major expense, but they can help you add additional storage space in your home so that everything has its place and all the clutter is out of the way.
Decluttering your home and finding space for everything is stressful, but thankfully, there are ways to find more storage space with the space you already have. Instead of buying a storage unit for all your extra stuff, you can utilize the unused areas in your home to keep things tidy and neat.
