Many of us today have no Idea what exactly it means to take a car in for a “Tune-Up.” From the 50’s through the 90’s what this generally meant was fine tuning your car to make it run like new again. This was done by replacing things like spark plugs and maybe the battery. Cleaning out the carburetor to improve fuel mix, replacing air and fuel filters, and fine-tuning your car’s timing and shifting linkage.
In modern cars, these things really aren’t that simple. Car’s no longer have carburetors since the advent of electronic fuel injection. Timing and shift controls are handled by the car’s onboard computer now. Even emissions are more controlled by computer chips than any physical systems on the car so in the modern era of cars what does a Tune-Up entail.
It’s More for Irregularities
Most people today talk about taking their car in for a tune-up when they notice the car isn’t running the way it used to. Maybe gas mileage is dropping or the car is becoming difficult to start. Either way, smaller problems are what people generally refer to as a tune-up now. New spark plugs and a battery charge will generally improve things, because more power is getting to the computer, and new filters can improve things somewhat.
Computers are used more than ever
More technology under the hood has been a great help in diagnosing problems with modern cars. Diagnostic computers can tell you precisely where the bottlenecks in your car’s systems are occurring and lets mechanics correct small problems before they become large ones. This will also test your o2 and fuel sensors to make sure they are operating properly.
Brakes and Rotors
This is one of the first things a mechanic will check because if your brakes are worn down or locked it will affect a host of other things on your car. Likewise, warped rotors can cause more problems than just a vibrating steering wheel.
These are three of the most common things that mechanics will check when you take your car in for a Tune-Up check, and the friendly folks at Thompson Hyundai are happy to get your car running like new again in no time.
