The Best Way to See a Movie: Guest Post by Tazim Damji

The Best Way to See a Movie

I don’t have a fancy decked-out home theater system, or a lavish set-up by any means. I do have a fairly comfortable sofa-bed and a decent sized TV, too. Even without much, I still prefer watching movies at home over going out to the movie theater. For one thing, my snack and drink selection is much better (and cheaper), plus I can talk, pause the movie or shut it off if I don’t like it. I’m much more likely to finish a bad movie if I’ve paid a lot for it, gone out to see it with someone and spent time out of my day to go to the movie theater, than if I’m in the comfort of my home.

Certain movies are more fun to watch in movie theaters, though—like The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings  movies, for instance. I know that many of the women I know, who have young children at home, like to take the family out to see the latest animated 3D movie. Around here, it seems like a movie theater closes every few months, so the only ones around are the ones that are massive, and only play mainstream movies. The ‘boring’ dramas and independent films don’t have homes in many of the theaters that are still around, so I tend to watch a lot of those types when I feel like watching a movie at home.

It can be so relaxing to cozy-up on a sofa with your family around you, some homemade popcorn and some blankets. But, I can understand the appeal of going out to movie theaters as well. What do you prefer?

What was the last movie you saw at home or in the movie theater?

Hmmm…the fact that I love movies and I had to think about this means it’s time to go rent some movies (or go to the theater). The last movie I saw was Zero Dark Thirty. But I saw a screening and it wasn’t in the theaters yet. The last movie I went to see at the movies…hmmm…I can’t remember which means it’s been too long. I know what I’ll be doing next week!

Before marriage, I used to go to the movies all the time. I love everything about a movie theater! The seats, the screen, it makes the whole feeling different. Even now, my favorite date is going to the movies, or maybe just anything that gets me out of the house. :)

Because babysitters are so darn expensive we have an option: go out for dinner OR a movie, never both together. I usually opt for dinner and then we rent a movie on demand. The last movie we rented was People Like Us which we both enjoyed…as a rental. I probably would have been a little disappointed if I paid theatre prices to see it.

Dinner out is sometimes a lot more fun than sitting in a theater for 2 hours anyhow! I need to catch up on some movies, but my husband is stuck on TV Shows right now!

I typically watch movies at home, but went out for a girl’s night over the weekend to catch Sky Fall at the $5 theater. While it was nice to catch it on the big screen, there were a bunch of teenagers cutting up in the back of the theater. I’ll probably pick it up on DVD this week and watch it again, because of the distractions.

There is nothing more annoying than being in a movie theater and having all those distractions from annoying teens! That’s probably one of the main reasons why I seldom go to the movies.
