While you’re out on the road, whether it’s on your way to work, a doctor’s appointment, school pick up, grocery shopping, or on a road trip, you should always be prepared for an emergency. Unfortunately, we never know when an emergency can happen, and it’s always better to be prepared. If you know where your closest dealer is, then that’s even better, if not here’s a list of essential items to always have in your car.
1. The car manual
I like to know that my car manual is easily accessible and that I can reference it at any time. It doesn’t matter if your vehicle is brand new or you’ve had it for ten years, being able to reference your manual in case of an emergency is essential. Always keep this in the glove compartment.
2. Spare tire and jack
I think that it’s important for any teen, woman, and man to know how to change out a tire in case it goes flat. It’s not as hard as it sounds, and you can learn at any time. I highly suggest to always carry a spare tire and jack just in case you need to change a tire out.
3. Jumper cables
There was this one time when my car worked perfectly all morning, and then on my last stop of the day, it wouldn’t start. I immediately knew it was the battery, I headed into my trunk, retrieved the jumper cables, and flagged someone down to help me. Having jumper cables available can help you save money (think tow truck) and a headache.
4. An empty fuel can
It’s easier to walk a mile with an empty fuel can then push your car all the way to the gas station. As a rule, when on a road trip, always fuel up once the fuel indicator shows the tank is 1/4th full.
5. First Aid Kit
It’s easy to get a paper cut while looking through your owner’s manual – trust me on this. However, in case of an emergency, it’s good to be prepared with a First Aid Kit readily available to you.
