Now that I feel better, and Spring is in a couple of days, I started thinking about which rooms to start my Spring Cleaning with. Since we use the kitchen the most, I decided to start in there. As I’m giving the kitchen a walk through, I opened up all of the cabinet drawers.
We have a designated “junk” drawer. It consists of screw drivers, nails and screws, jar lids, lighters, matches, twist ties, rubber bands, etc. While I was looking through it I found lost forks, lost spoons, and some of the kitchen knives I’ve been looking for. I was livid! I also realized that two more of my kitchen drawers have turned into junk drawers. I was able to consolidate everything into one drawer.
As I pull the drawer completely out and taking things out of it, I decided to share with you how I re-arranged everything without going crazy. Now that I think of it, I probably should have just thrown the whole thing out! Honestly sometimes I wish I just had a cleaning service that would just come in like little gnomes in the night, and make everything tidy and sparkly again.
1. Calm Down and Breathe
Seriously, you’re probably at the point that I was and just wanted to throw it all out. Just calm down, breath, count to ten, whatever helps. Grab your zip lock bags while you’re at it.
2. Place the Drawer On a Table
Place the drawer on a table and sort out into the piles everything that goes together. For example, place all the rubber bands together, nails, screws screwdrivers, etc. Throw out anything that you haven’t used or won’t be using (like that shriveled up note pad that doesn’t let you close the drawer properly.)
3. Use Your Zip Lock Bags
When you’re done sorting the drawer, label your bags with the items your putting into them. Release the air out of the bags and place them in the most important order from front to back.
4. Place a Note for the Family
For the first few weeks, I usually place a note, to let everyone know that everything has a place, and that there’s a place for everything. I also note that if there isn’t a baggie for it, then it doesn’t belong there.
I repeated this for the other two drawers, and I was so glad I was able to consolidate! I mean who in the world places hair clips, silk ties, and legos into a kitchen drawer?! Oye!
What crazy things have you encountered while Spring Cleaning?
