Next to your home, your car is one of the biggest cash investments. You’re going to spend the next 3-5 years making payments on a financed vehicle, and for that payment, you expect your car to get you to and from your destinations safely and reliably. You can help your car keep running like new by investing a small amount of your time and money in regular maintenance.
Your car has a lot of moving parts. Movement causes friction, and friction over time causes breakdowns. Regular maintenance is really all about catching the smaller bits of wear and tear before they become big problems. There are 4 kinds of regular maintenance that you can do to keep your car in top shape.
On a weekly basis, you’re really just keeping an eye on your vehicle’s fluids. Check and fill your washer fluid if needed, check and top off your engine oil if needed. Keep an eye out for any unusual noises or vibrations as you drive. Pick a day of the week and check your washer fluid and oil
Once a month you need to check and fill your other fluids as well. This would be things like Coolant, Brake Fluid, Power Steering, and Transmission. Follow your manual’s instructions and keep these at acceptable levels. You can check your tire pressure any time, but once a month you need to do a scheduled check and fill. While checking your pressure check your tire treads as well. While you’re under the hood, check your belts and hoses for any signs of wear or cracks.
Every three months or so, you should have your battery checked to make sure it’s holding a charge the way its supposed to. This is also the time when you should have your engine oil change, as well as air filters and oil filters. Make sure that when getting your oil changed that you have them check your chassis lubrication points as well (U joint fittings and grease boots)
Every Six Months
Twice a year you should have your tires rotated, and your wheel alignment checked. If you start to feel your car shimmy while driving or if it’s not turning correctly you can do this earlier. You should also change your wiper blades at this time as well.
