It has been said that necessity is the mother of invention. Never has this fact been so true as when an AC unit fails to keep a house or apartment cool in the summertime.
Why AC Units Fail in the Summertime
There are many reasons why AC units may fail. Some of these problems are preventable through simple maintenance on your part, such as changing out the air filter in order to prevent the system from freezing up. Other problems are not so simple to fix, such as:
Regardless of the reason behind an AC unit failure, the resulting discomfort when this takes place in summer months is unacceptable. The following is five ways that a family can stay cool in the summertime when an AC unit fails.
Blinds And Shades
When the day becomes hottest, sunlight that enters through windows creates a greenhouse effect inside the house. Even if windows are left open to allow a breeze into the house, the sunlight can cause temperatures to increase significantly inside the home. During the heat of the day, blinds should remain closed, shades should be lowered, and curtains should be shut.
Let Nature Work
When the sun sets in the evening, the temperature outside the home will begin to drop. Opening the windows at night will allow for some of the heat that has been trapped inside the home to escape. This will also allow cooler air to travel into the home. All windows to the home should be closed as soon as the sun rises in the morning. This will prevent new heat from entering.
Placing a bowl of ice in front of a table fan can provide relief from the heat when AC units are not working. Sitting in front of a fan that is blowing over a bowl of ice will feel like a mini air conditioner is blowing on you.
Turn Fan Counterclockwise
A ceiling fan that is blowing counterclockwise will pull hot air in the room upward toward the fan and allow the cool air to circulate below. This will lower the temperature in the room.
Use a Towel
Run cold water on a few towels. The first towel should be placed around your neck and other quick-cooling spots; the other towels should be placed in the freezer. This action will send signals to the brain that the body is cool. There will also be more towels at the ready when the one being used no longer gets the job done.
AC unit failures during the summer months can cause misery, but making use of the five tips above can provide your family with relief from what would otherwise be unbearable heat.
