What We Actually Believe

As women we don’t realize how much we let ourselves go for the sake of our families. A lot of us think that because we make meals at home and cook everything from scratch, it’s healthy. While, for the most part, it’s true, some of the ingredients we add are not healthy at all. I used to be one of them! I used to believe that adding fresh ricotta was healthy. I used to believe that using a 1/4 cup of olive oil in anything I cooked was healthy, well, it IS olive oil isn’t it?! I used to believe all of this! Everything “whole” is good for you, is the common belief. Everything “diet” is absolutely horrible, taste nasty, and costs massive amounts of money. This is NOT true. Honestly, I’ve been spending less buying healthier food, than I used to spend buying unhealthy food. Yes Seriously! Think about it, a bag of chips costs, on sale, $2.50 I can buy an entire 5lbs of apples for the same price! I’m going to show you how to achieve health through weight loss on a budget.

What We Should Believe

Four months ago, if someone told me that today, in my kitchen, I was going to have an entire fruit bowl sitting on my kitchen table half empty and ready to be refilled, I would have laughed at them. Four months ago, I had chips, soda, pretzels, cookies, and all other kinds of nonsense ready and at hand. With Nutrisystem, I have still been able to enjoy some of my favorite things but of course portioned. Now I admit, I have been passing this on to my family as well. I’ve been buying reduced fat cookies, and chips and anything else that the kids and hubby would miss. I also portion them out. Children are dangerous if you give them an entire bag of chips and ask them to share! Eating healthy IS cost effective. You should be believing in yourself, your health and that of your family. Eating healthy is not only beneficial to your health, but it can also be healthy for your pocket.

Eating Healthy ~ Make a Budget

How much do you spend on snacks? We used to spend at least $100 a month between chips, soda, cookies, etc. If I brought home healthy snacks like rice cakes, or baked chips, or granola/protein bars, the kids and hubby would pout for days on end. It shouldn’t be that way! You should get excited about eating healthy and saving money! Many people tell me that Nutrisystem is too expensive for them, I tell them the truth. There are many plans and many options to fit any budget. If you really think about it, it’s not any more expensive than the regular household’s grocery budget. “But you have to buy veggies and other supplemental foods.” Uhm, don’t you ALREADY do that? I’ve always bought veggies and fruits and cheeses. It’s always been part of my budget!

How to make a health conscience budget:

  • Calculate what your “junk food” costs.
  • Turn that price into your health food budget.
  • Use coupons when applicable. (There are many companies that offer coupons for their produce or fresh frozen veggies, etc.)
  • Buy in bulk – usually in some places, the more you buy the more you save
  • Go to a local farmer’s market, fresh food and low cost, plus you’re buying local!
  • Invest in your own garden
  • Make your own sauces or cheeses.

Realistically the first too bullet points is all you need to do, the others are just wonderful ideas that ACTUALLY work!

Healthy Foods That Taste Good:

Any fruit is yummy, plain and simple. Most have sugars that break down easily and are naturally filled with vitamins that help keep you healthy! A Banana has just as much protein as a steak would! Bananas as an afternoon snack is perfect! Not to mention it has potassium, can we say heart healthy?! You’ll also help get rid of charlie horses naturally! While some people think that healthy foods taste like cardboard, the truth is, you’re just not used to what natural flavors taste like. If you’re addicted to soda, buy seltzer water. Buy sugar free natural drink flavors, or add fruits to your water, like limes, lemon, strawberries, kiwis, or even cantaloups work well too!

There are protein/health bars that taste delicious, like Luna Bars or Quaker Bars. I’m in love with the Nutrisystem Chocolate Raspberry bar! YUM! Veggies taste good, I’m not promoting you stuff your face with brussel sprouts (I just can’t eat them), but try different vegetables. You are bound to find one that is perfect for you. Switch up your main dishes, don’t fry EVERTHING! Broil, bake, boil. You’ll be amazed how good food that isn’t fried tastes. I LOVE, and I mean L.O.V.E fried chicken, fried catfish, fried…anything! But I learned to bake them and broil them, and most importantly portion them.

So How Do You Achieve Health Through Weightloss, On A Budget?

Easy Peasy! Seriously. Just changing your diet a little bit, and exercising more brings you closer to being healthier. Have a fruit or some Greek Yogurt as a snack. They’re packed with protein and will keep your hunger at bay until your next meal. You don’t have to join a gym to exercise. Walk your dogs for an extra 10 minutes. Use your stairs. Turn on some dance music and dance! A friend of mine put a pull bar between her door frame and uses it for pull ups! Amazing! Turn your house into a gym! We have so much right in our own homes and just don’t realize it. Being healthy and losing weight is feasible on a budget.

My Results:

I just completed week 13 and I didn’t loose any weight this week, but I did lose another inch! YAY! My calves also feel a little firmer, so my dance moves are working! I just won’t do them in public! The good news is that I haven’t GAINED any weight either! I’ve been following the same tips I just gave you and they work! I promise. I haven’t had an asthma attack due to moving too fast in over 2 months. My knees don’t hurt anymore from doing the stairs. My cycles are beginning to normalize and my hormones are saying, “Hey this chick with PCOS who is supposed to get Diabetes is kicking our butt!” Yea that’s right hormones! Losing weight, eating better, and moving, is kicking YOUR butt not mine! I feel good, I look good and it shows. My drinking water has never been so exciting! I used to drink maybe 2 cups of water max a day. Now I carry my Nutrisystem water bottle like it’s a lifeline! If I can do it, honestly, so can you!
