Are you feeling low on energy? Feeling brain fog and can’t focus? Are you unable to sleep well? Experiencing joint pain, headaches, or stomach pain? If so, you may need a detox diet.
What is a detox? A detox is a healthy way of getting rid of toxins in the body. It’s a way to give your body a break from processed foods and stress. Think of it as pushing the reset button of your body. So why is a detox needed?
Our bodies work according to how it is maintained. Let’s take a car for example. Every 3,ooo miles or 3 months, you take your car in for an oil change. Why? Well, the engine will work to its fullest if you keep a consistent routine. The point of an oil change is to remove the old dirty oil and replace it with new oil. Generally, the oil filter is changed as well.
Over time, the oil in your car breaks down and is less effective. If you do not change the oil, you are bound to run into engine problems. People who love their car take maintenance very seriously. They know what will happen if they don’t. They even spend extra money to get the best oil and fuel!
Just as a car needs maintenance to function well, our bodies need proper nutrition to function efficiently. In order for our bodies to work at the highest level, we must give it high-quality food. This will give the body what is needed to recharge and get back on track. If not, it would be like putting cheap oil and fuel in an expensive luxury car.
Our bodies are more precious than cars of course! The crazy thing is, sometimes we are willing to invest more time and energy on material things than our bodies. It’s pretty sad when you think about it.
Even scarier is what our children are eating. Many suffer from stomach or gut issues, as well as allergies. Many times, it’s due to over processed foods, pesticides, pollutants and more. So what can you do to ensure your family’s health and well being? A detox diet!
Many people, especially children, are loaded with sugar on a daily basis. Almost everything has sugar in it. Children then complain about stomach discomfort and fatigue. Teachers notice a lack of focus, hyperactivity, and irritability. These signs can mean your child needs a gut cleanse. If you notice any of these signs, your child may need to detox. How can you help your child get rid of toxins?
Make a decision that you and your family will go on a detox together. Now, when most hear the word detox, they may think of torture. To be honest, it’s not as complicated as you think. Simple changes will make a big difference. Here are a few examples:
Drink Lots of Water
Water is an easy and natural way to detox. Instead of drinking juice or soda, replace it with water. The more water you drink, the more toxins you will push out of your body through sweat and urine. You will even see a difference in your skin and hair as a result.
If drinking water is difficult, add some fresh lemon juice. Lemon is a natural diuretic and will help the detoxing process. Also, you can make tasty detox water! It’s simple and easy! Use a glass jar that you can seal tightly. Depending on your taste, you can add sliced lemon, lime, ginger, cucumbers, oranges or mint.
Another option is to drink seltzer water. Be sure you drink seltzer water with no sodium and no artificial flavors or sugars.
Juicing is a great way to detox the body! By juicing, the nutrients get to the bloodstream faster. Be sure to incorporate greens that are high in nutrients and antioxidants. Great examples are kale and spinach. Keep in mind that veggies should be the primary ingredient. Fruits, although natural, are high in sugar. One of the goals of detoxing is to cut back on sugars.
Reduce Your Sugar Intake
As mentioned early, reducing sugar intake is essential. One of the benefits of cleansing the gut, is to get rid of the bad bacteria. Sugars feed certain bacterias and fungus. By reducing your sugar intake, you’re essentially starving what’s causing an unhealthy gut.
Cut out processed foods that contain sugars. Examples would be candy bars, cereals, cookies, etc. Anything that would be considered junk food! Replace it with fruits, veggies, nuts and even dark chocolate. Get the family involved and make healthy treats together.
There are many ways to create delicious and healthy desserts. For example, you can use dates or bananas as a sweetener. Vanilla, coconut sugar, and stevia are also great substitutes! It’s all about being creative and trying new things.
Buy Organic Fruits and Vegetables
Now, this may require some budgeting and shopping around. Organic foods can be pricier; however, you will be able to manage if you plan your meals and stick to a budget! Some reasons for gut cleansing are due to pesticides and other pollutants. Organic is the way to go and here is what you can do!
Go to your local markets for fruits and veggies. Look out for sales at the grocery stores as well. If possible, you can start a little garden at home. With some planning and creativity, you and your family can enjoy organic foods!
Reduce or Eliminate Processed Foods
What is meant by processed foods? It means foods that are not from the ground, a tree, or a mother. Pasta out of a can would be considered processed food! Instead, start preparing meals at home. Now, this may not be an easy task, especially if you and the family have busy schedules. Make preparing meals fun by getting everyone involved and planning out a schedule.
Remember, the health of your family is worth the time and energy! A detox diet is certainly doable and the benefits are endless. Start today!
