This is how my crate training research and journey began. Along the way I discovered some things that make it easier on your pup and yourself. Some of these things are a must and some, just like with babies are for comfort.
While I’m talking about some of the crate training essentionals, PetSmart® has even more crate training tips.
Crate Training Essentials
A Crate – Obviously
There are so many crates to choose from, but a wire crate works best for puppies. When it comes to crates, there is quite a variety to choose from.
- Hard Carriers
- Soft Carriers
- Wire Crates
- Kennels and Pens
- Pet Doors
- Auto Barriers and Safety Harnesses
Of course all of these have their own separate purposes and you can read about each crate here.
A Water Bottle or Bowl
While it isn’t a good idea for your pup to drink a lot of water, you still want them to be able to stay hydrated. There are tons of options available now (water bottle pictured above) and some training crates even come with a small food and water bowl! Yep totally nifty!
A Crate Mat – or Small Dog Mat
Let’s face it, the bare floor of anything is cold and hard on the body, if you wouldn’t sleep on the floor neither should your furbaby! Get a mat, it’ll help keep them warm and comfy.
A Warm Cozy Blanket
Nothing says comfort more than a soft and cozy blanket does. It will definitely help your pup feel at home and love their crate. They’ll be able to cuddle with it, turn it into a pillow or even a nest.
Chew Bones or Toys
It’s true many puppies are chewers, in fact even my grown dogs are chewers. They love their nylabones and rawhide. It helps to keep them busy, and help with the growing pains of teething.
A Doggy Toy
When it comes to keeping your pup busy and loving its cage – give him a friend! Dog toys and squeaky toys provide hours (or minutes) of fun and companionship. PetSmart has a huge selection of special puppy toys, definitely check them out.
If you’ve been thinking of getting a new puppy or crate training your current puppy, you may want to check out the sale going on at PetSmart® for crates, kennels, and accessories. The crates can usually be found on the side wall near the dog food or back wall of the store as pictured below.
