Sometimes we are so quick to run to a doctor as soon as we start coughing. This is true with our cars too! While it’s always safer to take your car to a mechanic, some things can be done by you. When your windshield wipers begin to squeak and smear, you can change them. Air filter dirty? You can change it! Oil a little on the low end, but you don’t need an oil change yet? You can top it off yourself! There’s a plethora of small routine maintenance that you can do yourself or with a tutorial.
Change the Windshield Wipers
Besides going to an auto parts store to pick up the correct wipers for your car, it’s super easy to do. Once you have your new wipers remove the old ones, and replace them with the new. There should be a clip on the windshield wiper arm where the blades attach. Snap them in and voilà new wipers installed!
While you’re installing the new wipers, this is definitely a good time to fill the windshield wiper washer well. Lift the hood of the car and look for the plastic container – the cap should be labeled accordingly. Remove the cap and pour in the windshield washer fluid.
Check the Oil
While you have the hood open, you should also check the oil. If you have never done this before, you may need to take a look at your owner’s manual so that you can locate the oil stick.
How to check the oil stick
- Pull the stick out
- Wipe it with a clean rag
- Replace the stick
- Pull it out again and read the oil level on the stick.
- If the car needs oil – you will be able to see that on the oil stick and top it off if need be.
Change the Air Filter
The air filter needs to be changed when it gets full of dust and dirt. This usually gets done when you go to change your oil, but sometimes it needs done a little sooner than your oil change.
It’s quite simple and there are tons of Youtube videos that show you step by step on how to do it properly and easily.
If your spark plugs need replaced take out your spark plug socket and get to work! If you’re not sure how to do it – Youtube it – I did!
