Road trips are fun, even more so as a family. Unfortunately, sometimes they can be daunting, especially if you don’t have a plan. We’ve been traveling every summer as a family, and I would love to share some tips we’ve learned throughout the years. Implementing these tips, will make your road trip a lot more fun. There are things to do on a short trip – say to a camp, or for a long road trip like going to Jersey Coast.
Check Your Vehicle
This should go without saying that the first thing you need to do is basic maintenance on your vehicle. Check your tires, oil, and other fluids. Fill up the gas tank, change the windshield wipers, you get the gist. This will ensure that you’ll be safe on the road during your trip.
Pick a time to leave and stick to it
I know this is the hardest part, but if you pick a time you need to stick to it. If you’re planning stops along the way, having a departure and arrival time will greatly help everyone.
Take plenty of entertainment
I don’t mean just for the kids either! Entertainment is essential, whether it’s a tablet, dvd player, or your entire music/book list…bring it with you! Not only will the kids be entertained, but you will also be as well. Being confined to a car for hours on end, can become boring. Don’t skip out on this step…you’ll thank me later. Don’t forget to play car games too!
Plan stops along the way
This isn’t just for the kids. If you’re a heavy coffee drinker, chances are you’ll need a potty break just as much as the kids do! This also helps everyone stretch their legs, get the blood flowing again and re-energized. The kids will be able to walk around or even run – depending on where you stop. This will help release some of the pent up energy they have.
Spread the trip up
Plan your travel so there are lots of stops along the way for children to run around and explore. You may not get there as quickly, but you can make it part of the vacation. If we are going to camp, we make sure we stick close to gas stations or rest stops. Planning a break every 2-3 hours helps to stretch your legs and keeps the boys interested. Some fun things to do is plan stops to some highway attractions or even quirky attractions like a zip line – if you’re into that kind of stuff!
