San Antonio is a jeweled oasis nestled in the middle of south central Texas and it offers way more than you probably think it does. The River Walk
When you think of an oasis, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a pool in the middle of the desert with a palm tree next to it. This 15-mile long cypress-lined collection of paths and stone bridges serves as the heart of San Antonio. Many of San Antonio’s top attractions are located along this 5-mile section of downtown. Everything from shops, to the best restaurants, and even museums can be found here.
Located about three miles from downtown, the four missions of Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada represent the oldest missions in the country. They were built as Native American towns and the monasteries acted as the religious centers of the towns.
Most people know the story of the Alamo. It was in this old Spanish Mission that a small band of Texans including James Bowie, David Crockett, and William Travis held off General Santa Anna and his army for 13 days making the ultimate symbol of courage and sacrifice. Bonus, this historical site is absolutely free to see.
Natural Bridge Caverns
The Bridge Caverns are named for the 60-foot long natural limestone bridge that spans the amphitheater at the entrance. The cavern offers a host of fun activities such as panning for gems, and fossils, exploring the massive drip formations and the HIdden Passage tour which is a 5000 square foot outdoor maze.
After the heat of the day, take your kids down to the DoSeum, an indoor museum with something for the whole family. This 65,000 square foot building contains state of the art exhibits, a spy academy, interactive robots, a musical staircase and the Children’s River. It’s some of the most fun you can have indoors in San Antonio
