Stick to a Routine
Many times traveling is a welcome way to break up your daily routine. While it’s good to try new things and enjoy an adventure, there are certain aspects of health that benefit from routine, including exercise and sleep. Although it’s easy to slack on your fitness routine when you’re traveling out of town, it’s smarter to do your best to keep in shape throughout your trip, especially if you’ll be gone for more than a few days. Hotels often have fitness rooms that they keep stocked with treadmills, stationary bikes and other exercise equipment, or you can bring your own yoga mat or fitness bands to use in your room. If you want to get plenty of sleep while you travel, then you should also try to maintain healthy sleep habits. If possible, stick to a regular sleep schedule and pack home comforts to help you fall asleep faster.
Watch Your Oral Health
Falling out of your regular hygiene routine and eating out-of-the-norm foods could lead to tooth and gum troubles. If you have poor oral health, then you may notice signs that you have gingivitis, which can lead to worse health problems if not treated. Whenever possible, it’s smart to prevent oral conditions like that from developing in the first place. Therefore, when you’re traveling, make sure that you brush and floss daily. Pack sugar-free gum to chew after meals if you won’t be able to brush right away. Don’t forget to give your teeth and gums a good look every now and then, and call an out-of-town dentist if you notice any urgent problems.
Make Your Own Food
Eating three restaurant meals a day can leave you feeling overstuffed and sluggish. Plus, meals from restaurants are often high in fat, sodium and calories. Not only that, but eating out can be an expensive part of traveling. Instead of booking a reservation for every meal, try to make your own food whenever possible. Renting a vacation apartment may give you access to a kitchenette where you can fix meals that are similar to what you’d normally eat at home. Hotel rooms often have mini fridges and microwaves so that you can heat up quick, healthy dishes, like oatmeal. Take fresh fruits and veggies that you can snack on between meals, or purchase some at a local grocery store. Both your waistline and your digestive system will thank you.
