Washington, D.C. is full of attractions and history. There are countless monuments, and museums to see, but what if you want to get away from the Hustle and Bustle of the D.C. area? Well you’re in luck because this part of the Atlantic seaboard nestled astride Virginia and Maryland is literally littered with the history of the beginnings of our great nation. Most of these destinations are perfect for families, or even for a romantic trip for two. Here are 5 of the best day trips to take from Washington D.C.
Designed and built by the third President, and writer of the Declaration of Independence, this former tobacco plantation was Thomas Jefferson’s primary residence. Located in Charlottesville Virginia, he began working on the home when he was only 26 and continued to perfect the building until he passed away in 1826 Jefferson’s burial place is on the grounds in an area known as Monticello Cemetery. Visitors can choose from a number of tours of the house and grounds including the family friendly tour, a sunset tour, and a behind the scenes tour.
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park
Established in 1961 the park was created outside of Hagerstown Maryland, to preserve the neglected remains of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. In the mid 1800’s the canal connected the communities along the Potomac River and was used to transport coal, wood, and various other products. Today the park offers a 184.5 mile tow path used for biking, hiking, and camping.
Ocean City Beach
Ocean city Maryland isn’t only known for it’s casino’s, it’s also know for its over 10 mile sandy beach. Ocean City is a great place for sunbathing, swimming, beachcombing, and all kinds of family fun. A specific section of the beach is reserved for surfers allowing for great water sports, and there are multiple washrooms and showers that can be used free of charge before heading up to the historic boardwalk to cap off the evening.
There is so much to see in the D.C. area that no list can really encompass everything there is to see, but for family fun or a romantic getaway for two there’s almost no better place in the country. This area is the birthplace of our nation so get out a see it this summer.
